Ohio's back-to-school sales tax holiday will take place soon, according to the Ohio Department of Taxation (ODT).

Established for the first weekend in August, this year's holiday will start at 12 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 and end at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7. 

During the holiday, purchases of the following are exempt from sales and use tax: 

- Items of clothing priced at $75 or less.

- Items of school supplies priced at $20 or less.

- Items of school instructional materials priced at $20 or less.

The back-to-school sales tax holiday started with temporary authorizations from lawmakers but has been a permanent fixture of law since the 2018 signing of 132-SB226 (Bacon).
